Music
The National Curriculum for Music aims to ensure that all pupils:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
- learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations
At King’s Sutton Primary Academy, we deliver these aims through a music scheme called Charanga. Children are taught music skills through topics that are engaging and practical.
We aim for our Music curriculum to:
- Engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music,
- Enable pupils to develop skills needed as a musician which will therefore increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement,
- Give children the opportunities to experience music from a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions as well as developing an understanding of composers and musicians,
- Teach children to sing and use their voices and to create and compose music independently and collaboratively,
- Support the children’s learning about technology and enable them to use this to help them progress with their music skills,
- Give children the understanding of and chance to explore how music is created, produced and communicated.
At King’s Sutton we pride ourselves in the quality of our singing in our school. Singing is important in our school and everyone has the opportunity to practice a variety of songs in our weekly Singing Assembly.
NMPAT Partnership
Our link with peripatetic teachers from NMPAT - Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust allow us to offer small group tuition of strings, (violin, cello and guitar), and piano. These are offered in Periods of 11 weeks for children in Year 2 upwards and currently cost £75.00 per period.
First Access consists of 10 weeks of FREE lessons to one whole year group which are funded through the Government’s National Music Plan. The main objective of the plan is to give every child the opportunity to learn a musical instrument for at least one term during their time in Key Stage 2. Funding support for the First Access projects comes from Arts Council England via the Music Hubs of which NMPAT is the lead partner for Northamptonshire.
