What are British Values?

 

 

What are Fundamental British Values?

Our school community considers these values to be those of:

  • Mutual respect and genuine tolerance of different faiths, cultures and beliefs
  • Democracy
  • Rule of law
  • Individual liberty


In our school we prepare children for life in modern Britain. This can be seen in our school through:

  • Our school community regarding people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance
  • Our school community understanding the difference between English law and differing views on right and wrong
  • Our ethos and teaching which supports English law
  • Respecting the rights of the individual 

 

In our school community we demonstrate Democracy through:

  • Pupil, staff and parent voice
  • Electing School Councillors
  • Questionnaires which contribution to school procedures and decision making

 

 

In our school community we demonstrate the Rule of Law through:

  • Class rules
  • An awareness of individual responsibilities and rights
  • Behaviour expectations
  • Behaviour Policy
  • Links with professionals such as  the police and fire services  
  •  Assemblies and teaching sessions re: rights and responsibilities and anti-social behaviour
  • Awareness of appropriate current affairs
  • Education of the aspects of safeguarding such as  e-safety 
 

 

In our school community we demonstrate Individual Liberty through:

  • Making individual choices in a safe, supportive environment
  • Tackling challenges and difficulties
  • Choice over and variety of extra-curricular activities
  • Making independent choices right from Reception 
  • Opportunities to take risks
  • Celebrating differences in culture
  • Values based education
 

 

In our school community we demonstrate Mutual Respect through:

  • The school’s values and vision
  • Partner Talk
  • Debating and discussion – ‘I challenge that…’ I support that…’
  • Lessons observed throughout the curriculum by all staff
  • High expectations of behaviour

 

 

In our school we demonstrate Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs through:

  • Assemblies
  • Delivery of RE
  • PSHE and Citizenship 
  • Visits and  guest speakers
  • Twinning projects within in partnership and trust
  • Participation in local and national events
  • Links with religious leaders  to support the curriculum where we can.
